DSI

Case Study / Manufacturing

How DSI turned one 14-foot custom HVAC build into a cinematic video that's helping close jobs and win new hires.

DSI's fabrication team had engineered and built a massive, custom HVAC duct system, sized at 14 feet, precision-welded and pitched to shed water off a client's rooftop. But the only way to show that work was a spec sheet and a still photo, neither of which came close to proving the scale or the skill behind it. We built a cinematic product story that puts DSI's own fabricators on camera walking through the build, then helped that single video grow into a full library of recruiting, onboarding, and training content.

The Hook
Bigger Than a Blueprint

A photo of a finished duct looks like a box. In real life, it's a 14-foot feat of engineering.

A flat sheet of metal doesn’t look like much. Neither does a photo of a finished duct sitting on a loading dock waiting to ship.

But somewhere between those two moments, DSI’s fabrication team was building a custom HVAC duct system 14 feet across, engineered, detailed, welded, and pitched to shed water off a client’s rooftop for years to come. For a long time, the only way DSI could tell that story to a prospect was a spec sheet and a still photo, and neither one came close to showing the scale, precision, or care that actually went into the work.

The Client
About Dynamic Systems, Inc.

An Austin-based mechanical contractor building the systems that keep the country's biggest facilities running.

Dynamic Systems, Inc. (DSI), a Quanta Services company, is a mechanical and process construction contractor headquartered in Austin, Texas, with more than 2,000 team members and fabrication facilities across the country. Founded in 1988, DSI designs, fabricates, and installs the HVAC, plumbing, and process piping systems behind healthcare, higher education, data center, and industrial facilities nationwide.

A core part of that work happens offsite, in DSI’s own fabrication shops, where custom sheet metal, duct, and piping systems are engineered and built to spec before they ever reach a job site. This project centers on one of those builds: a large-scale, fully custom HVAC duct system built for a single client’s rooftop specifications.

The Challenge
The Photograph Problem

A year of precision engineering, and no way to show it except a spec sheet.

DSI’s team had built something genuinely difficult, a custom duct system at a scale most fabrication shops never touch. Explaining that well was its own challenge.
01
The Scale Gap
A photo of a finished duct doesn’t communicate that it’s 14 feet across. Without a sense of scale, the work looked routine instead of exceptional.
02
Invisible Process
The hardest parts of the job, detailing, forming, welding, custom rigging, happened entirely behind the scenes, in a shop a prospect would never see.
03
Communication Barrier
Estimators and sales teams had to describe complex custom fabrication in proposals and conversations, with no visual way to back up the claim.
04
The stakes
Without a way to prove capability at this scale, DSI risked losing jobs to competitors who could show their work, not just describe it.
The Strategy
Building the Story Like They Build the Duct

A real-crew documentary that follows the build from flat metal to finished install.

DSI brought Mosaic in to create a cinematic product story, not a corporate explainer, built to show the size and craftsmanship of the work firsthand.

Real Voices, Real Process

We cast DSI’s own fabricators and detailers to describe the build in their own words, on the shop floor, instead of a single scripted spokesperson.

Scale as the Story

We framed the shots to make the true size of the duct, and the plant itself, the visual hero of the piece.

Step-by-Step Craft

We structured the narrative around the actual build sequence, detailing, forming, welding, and installation, so a prospect could actually follow the process.

Built for the Sales Conversation

We built the piece to work as a leave-behind for DSI’s sales team and a capabilities showcase on their website, wherever the team needed to prove scale fast.
Production
One Day on the Shop Floor

A five-person crew capturing the real fabrication, not a reenactment.

To capture a process this technical, we needed more than a camera. We needed to understand the plant first.

STEP 01 / DISCOVERY

Understanding the Build Before the Shoot

We spent time understanding the product, the people, and the plant itself, so we knew which team members and which parts of the facility told the story best.
STEP 02 / THE SHOOT

DSI's Own Fabricators on Camera

We filmed a five-person crew on-site over a single day, capturing DSI’s fabricators and detailers speaking about the build in their own words.
STEP 03 / THE PROCESS

Following Flat Metal to Finished Duct

We shot the actual sequence of the build: forming, welding, the custom tables and saddles built to handle a piece this size, and the finished install.
Post Production
From Flat Metal to Finished Story

Editing built to match the precision of the fabrication itself.

We cut DSI’s own voices together with real footage of the build, following the same sequence the team actually uses: flat material, forming, welding, and assembly, so a viewer could follow the process the way a fabricator does.

We paired that with the craftsmanship and pride DSI’s team brought to the work, so the piece felt less like a spec sheet and more like watching the job actually get built.

The response to the piece led DSI to keep going. What started as a single product video grew into more than 10 additional videos, including recruitment and onboarding videos, training videos, and additional event and product videos, all built off the same real-people, real-process approach.

The Results

What changed after the film went live.

This project wasn’t built to chase a metric. It was built to give DSI a way to prove what they can build, and it did.
SALES-READY

A Story to Show, Not Just Tell

DSI’s sales team now has a video that proves their custom fabrication capability at scale, instead of relying on a spec sheet and a photo.
10+ VIDEOS

One Video Became Many

The success of this piece led directly to more than 10 additional recruitment, onboarding, training, and product videos.

Proof at Full Scale

The finished piece is now the clearest way DSI can show a prospect exactly what a large-scale, fully custom duct build actually looks like.
TEAM PRIDE

Craftsmanship, On Camera

The fabricators who build DSI’s systems every day got to tell that story themselves, in their own words, instead of a spokesperson telling it for them.
From the Film / Fabrication Team Narrative

"One of the things I'm most proud of is the flow we've been able to create, where we don't have any downtime in the fabrication of the duct itself."

Takeaways
Why It Worked

This worked because DSI let the work speak for itself, on camera.

Proving capability is a creative problem as much as a technical one.
01 / SCALE

Show the Size, Don't Describe It

A single establishing shot of a 14-foot duct does more than a paragraph of specs ever could.
02 / PEOPLE

Let the Builders Tell It

Real fabricators explaining their own process build more trust than a script read by a spokesperson.
03 / PROCESS

Structure Follows the Build

Following the actual fabrication sequence, from flat metal to install, gives a non-technical viewer a real way to understand complex work.
04 / REUSE

One Video Is Rarely Just One Video

A strong product film has a way of turning into recruiting, training, and onboarding content once the team sees what’s possible.
