Save The Wave Case Study

Case Study / Manufacturing & Conservation

How Save The Wave turned a near-death experience into a brand story that sells without selling specs.

Andrew Crane survived a catastrophic accident and rebuilt his life around a mission. We helped him launch Save The Wave with a cinematic brand film and a library of social cutdowns that lead with purpose, not product specs.

The Hook
An Inflection Point in the Surf

A pipe exploded in his face. What he built next became a movement.

In February 2024, Andrew Crane was a successful roofing company owner in Corpus Christi, living a comfortable but unfulfilled life. That changed in a split second when a PVC water pipe exploded into his face. The impact cracked his skull from his nose to his ears and left him blind in his right eye.
Lying in recovery and facing his own mortality, Andrew realized chasing profits no longer felt like enough. He reached an inflection point, walked away from construction, and returned to a college dream he had shelved years earlier. That was the birth of Save The Wave, a company built on turning negatives into positives.
The Client
About Save The Wave

The only company hoping to put itself out of business.

Save The Wave is a startup manufacturer and non-profit based in Corpus Christi, Texas, sitting at the
intersection of sporting goods and environmental conservation. Andrew and his team collect discarded
plastics from Texas beaches and upcycle them into high-performance fishing lures.

Their mission is bittersweet by design. Andrew often says they are the only business aiming to go out of
business, because if they run out of raw material, it means the oceans are finally clean.

The Challenge
Beyond the What to the Why

A revolutionary product with no story to make people care.

Andrew had a great product, but his instinct was to lead with specs. In a crowded market, a specs-first approach rarely builds lasting loyalty.
01
Big-box competition
Why would a fisherman choose a startup lure over an established, familiar brand?
02
The connection gap
How do you make someone who does not even fish care about a tackle company?
03
Founder repositioning
Andrew needed to shift from a roofing guy with a hobby to a visionary leader with a mission.
04
The stakes
Without a compelling story, Save The Wave risked being seen as just another niche product instead of a movement.
The Strategy
The Human-First Pivot

People don't buy what you do. They buy why you do it.

We stepped in as strategic partners, not just a crew with cameras. The plan put Andrew’s story at the center.

Establish the Origin Story

We leveraged Andrew’s near-death experience to create an immediate emotional hook that pulls the viewer in fast.

Build Real Authority

We positioned the product as high-quality equipment, not a charity purchase, so it could compete on merit.

The Parallel Narrative

We drew the line between his shattered life being rebuilt and shattered beach plastic becoming something beautiful, a story impossible to ignore.

Multi-Platform Library

We planned a set of social assets to drive traffic from the story straight to the ordering page.
Production
Filming the Heart of Corpus Christi

One intensive day, four crew, and one rogue wave.

We shot over an intensive day in Corpus Christi with a four-person crew on cinema-grade cameras, chasing the documentary feel Andrew wanted.

Step 01 / THE SHOT LIST

Workshop to water.

We captured the manufacturing grit, the raw beach problem, hero shots of Andrew on the water, and macro detail of the upcycled lures.
Step 02 / THE PIVOT

Quick thinking on set.

A rogue wave caught one of our primary cameras near the surf. We pivoted instantly to our secondary cinema body and lost no momentum.
Step 03 / THE CONTRAST

Heat against calm.

We spent hours in the workshop capturing the melting plastic and the grit, then set it against the serene beauty of the beach interviews.
Post Production
Crafting the Emotional Arc

This is where the story truly came to life.

We built a non-linear edit that opens with the sound of the exploding pipe to grab attention immediately. The pacing mirrors Andrew’s journey, starting with high-tension cuts during the accident, then slowing into a meditative, hopeful rhythm as he describes his second lease on life.
We graded the beach scenes warm to evoke home and nostalgia, and pushed cooler, industrial tones for the manufacturing segments. Layered environmental sound, the ocean, the crackle of plastic, and a stirring score, reinforced the emotional weight of his words.

By leading with a human story, Andrew bypassed the noise of traditional sporting goods marketing.

Everybody else controls the athlete. The coach, the teacher, the recruiter. This business is a direct reflection of turning negatives into positives.”

Takeaways
Why It Worked

This worked because it felt like a documentary, not a commercial.

By letting himself be vulnerable on camera, Andrew built a bridge of trust that specs never could.
01 / PURPOSE

Why beats what.

Your product features matter, but your purpose is what converts.
02 / PLANNING

Strategy is pre-production.

A discovery workshop makes sure the video solves a real business problem.
03 / REUSE

Atomize the content.

One day of filming became 10 social assets and months of content.
04 / CRAFT

Professionalism matters.

Cinema-grade work elevates a brand from local startup to industry leader.
