B2B Video Production in Houston: A Guide for Technical Companies...
Launching a new app is hard. Launching one that has to win over three different audiences at once is harder. That was the job in front of us on this Connected Athletics video case study.
Here’s the short version. Connected Athletics needed a launch video that would make student athletes, parents and college coaches all understand and trust a brand new recruiting app. We built the video around real interviews with athletes, parents and people who know recruiting firsthand. The launch delivered 54% more app downloads and 15,000 new athletes.
We’re Mosaic Media Films, a B2B video production company based in Austin, Texas, serving Dallas, Houston and San Antonio since 2011. We work with a lot of technology companies, and this project is a good model for anyone getting ready to launch something new.
Connected Athletics needed to launch a new recruiting app to athletes, parents and coaches at the same time. Mosaic built a three minute launch video around real interviews with athletes, parents and the people behind the app, plus a social promo. The launch drove 54% more app downloads and 15,000 new athletes.

ToggleWhat Was the Challenge?
Connected Athletics built an app to help student athletes get noticed by college coaches and recruiters. The problem it solves is real. As one athlete put it in the video, the hard part is knowing “who to trust and where to look.”
Athletes from smaller towns face an even steeper climb. One voice in the video says it simply: “If you grow up in a small town like it could be hard.”
The marketing challenge had three layers:
- Athletes needed to see the app as theirs, a place to control their own story and brand.
- Parents needed to trust it and understand how they could help.
- Coaches and recruiters needed a reason to show up on the platform, too.
A single scripted message from the company would not reach all three. Each group needed to hear from people like them.
How Did We Plan the Shoot?
We started where we always start, with the first two steps of The Mosaic Method™: Define the Win and Know Your Viewer.
The win was clear. Downloads and sign-ups at launch. The viewers were less simple, because there were three of them. So instead of writing a voiceover, we planned interviews with each audience:
- Student athletes talking about the struggle to get seen, and what they actually do in the app
- Parents talking about helping their kids and why they’d recommend it
- People who know recruiting and the Connected Athletics team talking about how recruiting has changed and what the app makes possible
Interviews like these work best when the questions are built around the real worries of each group. That’s how you get answers that sound like people, not ad copy.
What Did the Interviews Capture?
Here’s what happens when you let real people speak. The best lines in the video came straight from them.
One athlete describing a favorite feature said you can post “an inspirational quote and explain why you like the quote but also like some highlights and what you did in your day.” Another summed up the experience: “There’s nothing out there really like it right now.”
A parent gave the line every other parent needed to hear: “I would absolutely recommend this app to other parents.”
And someone who was recruited back in the early 90s pointed out that communication between student athletes and coaches has always mattered, and technology makes it easier now. That’s the kind of credibility a company can’t give itself.
What Did We Deliver?
The main deliverable was a launch video for Connected Athletics that runs just under three minutes. It moves from the problem athletes face, to how the app works, to why athletes and parents believe in it.
We also delivered a short Connected Athletics social promo built for the feeds where athletes actually spend their time.
That’s the core idea behind how we work. One planned production gives you a long-form piece for your website and launch, plus short versions for social. Each one does a different job, and they all point the same direction.
What Did This Connected Athletics Video Case Study Show?
The launch delivered:
| Result | What It Means |
|---|---|
| 54% more app downloads | More athletes took the first step |
| 15,000 new athletes at launch | A real user base from day one |
For a brand new platform, that early momentum matters. Every athlete who joins makes the app more valuable to coaches and recruiters, and every coach who joins makes it more valuable to athletes.
What Can Your Business Learn From This?
You don’t have to be launching a sports app for these lessons to apply. Most B2B technology companies sell to more than one person: the user, the buyer, the executive who signs off. Here’s what to take from this project:
- Name every audience before the shoot. If three groups need to say yes, plan who on camera will speak to each one.
- Let customers carry the message. That’s step four of our method, Turn Customers Into Salespeople. A parent recommending the app beats any claim the company could make.
- Write questions, not scripts. Real answers to good questions sound more honest than polished lines.
- Plan the short versions up front. A launch needs a main video and social cuts at the same time.

Frequently Asked Questions
What results did the Connected Athletics video deliver?
The Connected Athletics launch drove 54% more app downloads and brought in 15,000 new athletes at launch.
How long is the Connected Athletics launch video?
The main launch video runs just under three minutes. It was paired with a shorter social promo for social media feeds.
Why use interviews instead of a scripted voiceover for an app launch?
Interviews let each audience hear from people like them. When athletes and parents speak in their own words, the message feels more honest and builds trust faster.
Can a B2B tech company use the same approach?
Yes. Most B2B purchases involve several decision makers. Planning interviews that speak to each one helps a single video move the whole buying group.
